If you’re interested in focusing completely on creating a film without also trying to trudge up the mountain, hang from a cliff, and carry everything you need to survive, this is the course for you.
GoPro Mountain Games is the perfect combination of adventure sport and learning environment. With over 50,000 in attendance every year, athletes & spectators converge to compete in 9 sports across 25 disciplines. There is plenty of opportunity to get cameras wet, muddy, and focus on world-class athletes, music, and art. The story possibilities are endless.
A huge benefit of your course is a VIP media pass. Unlike a normal spectator, you’ll get up-close to the action by entering roped off areas. We’ll help you pre-arrange access to athletes, or skip the crowed concert mob and be front & center at the stage. You’ll learn how to approach athletes for interviews, strategies to capture audio in an loud event environment, and continually hone your story as you work.
We know a well crafted story can make the different between a good film, and a great one. That’s why we’ve built in time to plan & develop your story before you’re on the course.
Using Google Hangout, phone, and email, you’ll work 1:1 and in groups to discuss development techniques, write a treatment, and develop a shot-list, and visualize your film. You’ll come into the trip feeling prepared and ready to start shooting.
During our field session, it’s game on. Execute your pre-production plan and get the shots you need. Dive deeper into visual storytelling, through shot type, angle, and lensing. Learn strategies to combat loud event sound. Work with the team at GoPro to learn how best to use their camera to get compelling and engaging shots. Since we are staying in town, we’ll have opportunities to review footage each night and provide feedback to improve your shots for the next day.
After our the event, we’ll begin the editing process. We intentionally compress edit time to keep you moving toward a deadline. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish in such a short amount of time. Learn to optimize for the edit. Create sequences, add audio and sweeten up your film for viewing at our participant film festival.
Once you enter the production phase, all lodging, passes, and instruction are inclusive. We believe a team that stays together builds strong bonds and relationships that last beyond the course. As such, our team will stay at the lovely Antlers in Vail which features amazing 3-bedroom suites with full kitchen, laundry, and living room. Enjoy a quick run on the trails, in the gym, or a soak in the pool/spa between renders. As we will not be staying in the same room, meals are not included. However Vail has some great restaurants, and/or your kitchen is full stocked if you want to whip something up. Be prepared for immersion, fun, and learning.
It’s also worth noting the obvious — since we are in town, you’ll have access to power to charge your equipment every night, review & process footage, and use more film tools such as jibs, sliders, and gimbals. This means more time to focus on story, your technique, and improve the next day.
This is an investment in your future. Course participants become Adventure Film School alumni and will have access to our alumni forum, special events, course discounts, resources, and project opportunities.
