You’re one part active expedition member, one part storyteller. First up. Last to bed. You’ll be in the thick of it — trying to make it down the trail while also managing your gear, shooting on-the-go, and honing those filmmaking skills. It can be a lot to juggle, we know. Let us show you the tricks of the trade.
This trip is appropriate for both beginner and advanced filmmakers/adventurers. Gain strategies to keep shooting for multiple days in remote locations, learn timelapse techniques, and hone your craft as your story evolves. Work with our experienced team to gain real-world field experience creating your own 3-5 minute film in Peru.
As if the beautiful backdrop of the Andes and Machu Picchu weren’t enough, this course features AFS instructor and Emmy award winning filmmaker Keith Partridge. From the summit of Everest to deep unexplored caves, his experience in adventure filmmaking is surpassed by very few. Keith’s work has been shown on the BBC, Discovery, National Geographic, and 20th Century Fox. This Touching the Void filmmaker is recognized internationally for his work in extreme-locations and for 2 weeks will be your personal mentor. If that doesn’t get you excited, we’re not sure what will!

We know a well crafted story can make the different between a good film, and a great one. We also know there are multiple components to traveling internationally. That’s why we’ve built in time to plan & develop your story before you’re in Peru.
Using Google Hangout, phone, and email, you’ll work 1:1 and in groups to discuss development techniques, write a treatment, develop a shot-list, and visualize your film. You’ll come into the trip feeling prepared and ready to start shooting.
After a multiple days trekking, hiking, exploring this beautiful land we will return to a lovely home in Cusco to begin the editing process. We intentionally compress edit time to keep you moving toward a deadline. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish in such a short amount of time. Learn to optimize for the edit. Create sequences, add audio and sweeten up your film for viewing at our participant film festival.
To begin story development & pre-production, your course starts one month before we enter South America. Join remote group sessions with your fellow filmmakers & instructors as well as 1:1 phone and email discussions. Receive notes and resources to help visualize your story.
Once you enter the production phase in Peru, your round-trip flight from Lima to Cusco, all lodging, instruction, and meals are inclusive. We believe a team that stays together builds strong bonds and relationships that last beyond.
Set at one of the Seven Wonders of The World, our iconic destination offers some of the most historical and breathtaking monuments as the backdrop for your film. You’ll have opportunity to visit local ruins, bustling markets, and remote villages. Our mule & horse supported trek allows for an easier hiking experience to better concentrate on your filmmaking goals. Spend a full week in the field eating freshly prepared meals, energizing you to film, edit, and hike all day. Experience and capture both the Peruvian city life and the contrasting mountain culture with 13 nights of fully accommodated lodging from cozy casa’s to remote backcountry camping.
Once we’re out of the field, don’t say goodbye just yet. Post-production begins at our editing house located in Cusco, Peru. Here you will still feel nestled between the Urubamba Valley and the Andes Mountain Range. Spend several days editing your footage, understanding the post-production process and working directly with instructors to get the final piece you’ve envisioned for weeks now. Be prepared for nothing but cultural immersion, fun and learning.
You won’t leave Peru with one project and you’re done. This is an investment in your future. Connect to a community that will continue to support you beyond this course. Course participants become Adventure Film School alumni and will have access to our alumni forum, special events, course discounts, resources, and project opportunities.
AFS is an invaluable experience that compresses several months worth of education & training into one week. You will benefit from it even if, like me, you’ve never held a camera
